My father was skilled sheet-metal worker, coachbuilder and panel-beater. Whilst at school I assisted him in panel beating, rust repair, wheeling and shaping panels. 1957- 1963
3 Ford 10 Special
Futile attempt to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear 1962
4 Aluminium monocoque sports car-
To be powered by mid mounted motorcycle engine. Never completed due to technical problems. 1960-1962
5 1938 Triumph Dolomite special
Building a steel-framed, beaten aluminium body for a friend at Benmore, raced on Haul-roads 1964
6 Ministry of Works Benmore: Apprentice Circuit:
I worked in the Boiler-making shop, Machine Shop, Plant Repair Depot (working on Earthmoving machinery etc).
7 Ministry of Works Benmore: Mechanical Draughtsman:
Design of cranes, lifting gear, construction equipment, special and modified vehicles used on site. I received formal, on-job, training in mechanical design, stress analysis, properties of materials, workshop technology, and construction techniques. 1962 to 1966
8 Certified Concrete Ltd Christchurch- Design Draughtsman- 1966-1968
Sole responsibility for design of concrete Batching plant, Gravel plant, and Ready Mix Concrete trucks. We pioneered the design of light weight, high pressure hydraulic mixer trucks, superior to vehicles built even today.
9 Todd Motor Industries- 1968 to 1972
As “Mechanical Draughtsman” then “Tooling and Equipment Engineer” I was responsible for all plant, facilities and tooling required for manufacture of Chrysler, Hillman, Mitsubishi, Commer and Dodge vehicles. Highlights- Complete tooling and launch of VH Valiant range, including Valiant Charger. 1968-1972
10 Ford Motor Co-
“Process Engineer” for 5 years – Process Engineering, including body shop, metal finish, paint, mechanical, and final assembly for Ford Cortina Mk3 and 4 range, Ford Escort Mk 1 and 2 range, Ford transit range, etc.
11 New Zealand Electricity Department:
Gas Turbine Generation Engineer: Responsible for operation and maintenance of Stratford, Whirinaki and Otahuhu Power Stations. Involved performance analysis of Rolls Royce, Pratt & Whitney, and Curtiss Wright equipment, development of maintenance procedures, design and manufacture of locally made components including complete replacement Turbine casings made of Ni-resist Iron. 1978-1988

Ford Zephyr Mk1 Convertible-
Restoration, work included overhaul of power hood, and design and manufacture of hydraulic power window system, including making all valves and cylinders. 1966- 1968
